nip-3 nodules possess several layers of large cells filled with bacteroids, whereas nip-1 is primarily blocked at
the earlier stage of endocellular bacterial release. nip-3 nodules have a detectable N2-fixation capacity. nip-3 plants have short lateral root. Primary root growth (but not lateral root elongation) in nip-3 mutants is less inhibited than for nip-1.
Single gene targeted?
yes
Extra Information
nip-3 is a weaker allele than nip-1 and probably also weaker than nip-2 (Bright et al. 2005).
